The skills children develop on the mats often help them far beyond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. From rugby and football to dance, swimming, and everyday life, BJJ builds confidence, resilience, coordination, and body awareness that can support success in many different activities.
As parents, we all want to help our children grow into confident, capable, and resilient young people.
When choosing an activity for our kids, it’s natural to think about fitness, friendships, and having fun. But many parents are also looking for activities that will help their child develop skills they can use throughout life and across different sports.
Through more than 20 years of coaching experience, over 30 years of competition experience, and more than 40 years of combined experience practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we’ve seen firsthand how the lessons children learn through BJJ often transfer into other sports, school environments, and everyday challenges.
Many of these are the same benefits of BJJ for kids that parents hope to develop through sport, including confidence, resilience, coordination, and self-belief.
The goal isn’t simply to become better at Jiu-Jitsu.
It’s about developing the confidence, coordination, resilience, and body awareness that help children thrive wherever life takes them.
WHAT IS PHYSICAL LITERACY?
Physical literacy is the ability to move confidently and competently in a wide range of situations.
It’s the foundation that helps children participate successfully in sport, recreation, and physical activity throughout their lives.
Rather than focusing on one specific sport, physical literacy develops fundamental movement skills such as:
- Balance
- Coordination
- Agility
- Spatial awareness
- Movement control
- Body awareness
These skills form the building blocks for success in almost every physical activity a child may choose to pursue.
HOW BJJ BUILDS TRANSFERABLE PHYSICAL SKILLS
One of the biggest benefits of BJJ for kids is the way it develops movement skills that transfer into many other sports.
Every class encourages children to:
- Move in different directions
- Maintain balance while under pressure
- Control their body movements
- Coordinate both sides of the body
- React to changing situations
- Develop awareness of space and positioning
Unlike many sports that focus heavily on one movement pattern, BJJ exposes children to a wide variety of movements that help improve overall athletic development.
This can create a strong foundation that supports participation in sports such as rugby league, AFL, soccer, basketball, netball, gymnastics, swimming, dance, and many others.
THE MENTAL SKILLS THAT TRANSFER BEYOND SPORT
The benefits of BJJ aren’t limited to physical development.
Many of the most valuable lessons happen mentally and emotionally.
Through structured training and age-appropriate challenges, children learn to:
- Stay calm under pressure
- Focus on instructions
- Solve problems independently
- Persist when things become difficult
- Bounce back from setbacks
- Develop confidence through effort and progress
These skills can help children not only in sport but also in school, friendships, and everyday life.
Many parents are initially attracted to the physical benefits of BJJ for kids, but often find the confidence, resilience, and personal growth become even more valuable over time.
A LOCAL EXAMPLE FROM THE ROCKINGHAM SHARKS
Recently, we had the opportunity to assist with several training sessions for the U6 program at the Rockingham Sharks Rugby League Club.
Our four-year-old son currently participates in the program, and when the coaches were unavailable, we stepped in to help support the sessions.
Although rugby league and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may appear very different on the surface, this experience reinforced something we see consistently through coaching: many of the core benefits developed in BJJ are fundamental to a child’s success in rugby league and other sports.
Working with children aged four to six, we noticed how clearly these transferable foundations appeared in both environments:
- Listening and following instructions
- Balance and coordination under movement
- Confidence in physical activity
- Working with teammates and partners
- Resilience when things don’t go to plan
- Learning through structured games and play
At this age, it becomes clear that progress is not about advanced technique in any one sport, but about building strong movement, thinking, and behavioural foundations.
These are exactly the same foundations we focus on every day in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and they form the basis for long-term development in any sport a child chooses to pursue.
Whether it is rugby league, football, netball, swimming, gymnastics, or dance, these core skills give children a stronger starting point.
SPORT ISN’T THE ONLY BENEFIT
One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching children is seeing how their growth extends beyond physical activities.
Parents often tell us they notice improvements in areas such as:
- Confidence at school
- Listening skills
- Focus and concentration
- Social interactions
- Independence
- Emotional resilience
These outcomes aren’t created by learning techniques alone.
They come from being part of a positive environment where children are encouraged to learn, grow, overcome challenges, and support one another.
At Rockingham BJJ, we believe these lessons are just as important as any skill learned on the mats.
BUILDING FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE
Every child is different.
Some will go on to play rugby league, football, netball, or basketball. Others may choose dance, swimming, athletics, or completely different pursuits.
Our goal isn’t to prepare children for one specific sport.
Our goal is to help them build strong foundations that support confidence, resilience, movement, and lifelong learning.
When children develop these skills early, they carry them into every area of life.
That’s one of the reasons many parents consider the long-term benefits of BJJ for kids when choosing activities that support their child’s development.
